Phi Phi consists of 2 islands, Phi Phi Le and Phi Phi Don. Phi Phi Don is the inhabited island and Phi Phi Le is where Maya Bay is, the beach where the Leonardo De Crapio filmed "The Beach". Unfortunately, although 'The Beach' is stunning, the backpackers/tourists have left their mark, and there was an outrageous amount of litter left which ruined it. Hopefully its been cleaned up since then. |
| | Perfect I stayed at a resort called Palm Beach, which was accessed by boat, had nice little bungalows on stilts and a private beach.
In the evening we used to get the sea-gypseys to ferry us in a long boat down to Tonsai Bay, where there are shops, thai massage, curry houses . At night the sea was as still as a mill-pond and there are no lights on the long-boats, so we were in complete darkness. The plankton glowed phosphorescent as it splashed against the boat, and the fireflies twinkle like fairy lights along the edge of the island. With the stars twinkling in the sky, and the chugging of the boat in the background, this has to be one of my most tranquil moments! |
Ouch! Beware Black Spikey things I was with my ex when we decided to do some snorkelling, and we'd seen these signs which resembled black spikey things. Snorkelling back, the sea had gone out and we were swimming rather close to these spikey anemones, and my ex hit one with his foot. He hobbled off in a panic to the medic. I decided I'd better see how he was doing, so I walked towards the direction of the medics room, to be met with this wailing noise. I rushed in and was met with the smell of peroxide, the horrified face of my ex, and the medic, who was smacking these barb-ended spikes in with some kind of stone. It was the most bizarre sight and I must confess I had a good chuckle at his expense. I said to him, "She obviously knows what she's doing" and they did clear up a few days later. You have been warned!! | | |

ollyf Wed Jul 4, 2007 16:19 UTC The "sea anemones" you mention are actually sea urchins. But having been jabbed and infected by one, I agree - be careful! | mar1956tin Tue Jan 11, 2005 00:36 UTC Hi Rachel, more interesting tips and stories from Ko Phi Phi Don, famed "Beach". I guess fortune follows fame as created by the film, hence backpackers, trash and cans, but not always in that order. Thanks for sharing. Martin | JustinJansen Mon Aug 9, 2004 22:25 UTC Pretty bad down there at Kho Phi Phi, with litter and heaps of tourist! Anyway it is a nice scenery! | jto Sat Apr 17, 2004 13:26 UTC The "real" beach looks more inviting the the movie :D It looks great here. Another paraide :) |
