Whenever one looks for information about Gozo one often sees the picture of Mgarr Harbour with the Gozo ferry, the yachts and a couple of fishing boats. A quaint picture, true, but that is just the front door.
Gozo is perfect for those who love walking. Public transport exists but... Anyway, in Gozo there is more natural environment than Malta and country walks are progressively becoming more popular. One problem is that most fields are private property so keeping to the path is advisable rather than walking on the soil. In the hunting seasons there is a greater probability of getting hit by leadshot. Another problem is that Gozo is quite hilly, although it's called the Island of (just) the Three Hills.
The best time for a walk is spring. Autumn and winter are pleasant too if it's not raining. In summer you might get severely sunburnt. Huge trees are scarce except for a solitary carob tree but still you can always walk along the coast. Especially the North and Eastern parts where you can also swim at the same time. The rest of the coast is cliffs.
Some Gozitan local councils have prepared or are preparing maps and guides of Gozo country walks.
