Fort William Town is getting better but it is still a fairly drab and unattractive place - which would be bypassed except for a few major attractions and its strategic location.
The town centre has little charm, though some may find its tourist shops and rough decor interesting. It cannot be called pretty.
Worst for me it the dual carriageway that bypasses the town but cuts it off from the water - reducing the whole waterfront to an eyesore.
.
Despite my problems with the town itself, the location, in Lochaber is superb, though in summer over run by tourists.
Ben Nevis - The highest summit in Scotland
Glen Nevis - delightfully beautiful valley
Road to the Isles - The road to Malaig, west of FW - superb, as long as you don't crash (see my tips!)
Rail and Coach links to Glasgow, Inverness and Isle of Skye - and the superb steam train to Mallaig (Harry Potter).
West Highland Way - northern end (starts Glasgow and meanders via Loch Lomond and Glencoe into "Fort Bill")
Glencoe - breathtaking wild valley steeped in history - south of "Fort Bill"
Nevis Range - Mountain Centre - Winter skiing, summer downhill biking and a scenic gondola ride.
Great Glen - Canals linking lochs to Inverness. Neptune's staircase lock gates enables boats to skip the treacherous sea voyage around north coast. Leads to Fort Augustus and Loch Ness.
.
The town remains disappointing, despite the huge benefit of a pedestrianised High Street.
Fort William has however tons of accommodation, B&Bs, hostels, campsites and hotels.
Hospital (Emergency)
Safeway Supermarket
Crannog Seafood Restaurant
Bars and Tourist Shops
Outdoor Equipment Shops
Railway and Coach Station
Tiny Cinema at Tourist Info.
The Worst Chip Shop in My Memory

Sorry to hear of your mishap on the road to the isles!
Another excellent page -- thank you.
off to Glencoe again in three weeks time..... hired a house for the week nearby. Hoping for good walking weather.
Ah memories! Couldn't have put it better - tried for the Crannog but was already closed just after 9pm on a Thursday! So had to fend for outselves and the outcome wasn't pretty! Got to see the hidden valley at Glen Nevis so that made up for it.
Fantastic photo of the Malaig Railway. Your pages are great... and make me want to get back up to the Highlands (haven't been back yet this year). All the best, Jules
Aw, it may be shabby, but I have a soft spot for FW! But I finally nagged enough for a table at the Crannog and wasn't impressed at all! Now, the Grog and Gruel, that was alright!
Some good tips on my love/hate town in the Highlands... Sounds like quite a tour you had... I was there a couple of days ago - it was heaving with tourists...
Again, on-the-spot tips for Fort William. Like so often said, their major mistake was wasting the shoreline with this stupid dual carriageway. They could have had an awfull nice promenade alongside Loch Linnhe... oh well...
You've tormented us on this page. One superb photo is not enough, we expect more from you. Get on your bike again with camera and don't fall off this time! (I just broke my collarbone racing)
Glad you survived....quite an experience!
