Dublin... The agony and the ectasy

by Cruefan - last update: May 31, 2005

Dublin.. The other Boston

The river Liffey
I visited Dublin on May 26-28th 2005 and what struck me from the start was that Dublin and Boston have alot in common. Both have a river running through them, both have a big student population, and both have lots of history and nightlife.
I also noticed that both cities have the same smells and vibe. But Dublin is definatly original in many other ways.
The local Dubs are actually very patient with visitors and the only rude people I dealt with were fellow americans in Temple Bar.
If your visiting Dublin I can really see two camps. The first is the tourist who loves history and wants to see everything and anything doing with history. The second is the tourist who wants to take in the pubs and discos. Dublin has no problem in either case.

Dublin for the history tourist

If you like history Dublin is definatly a place you have to visit. I found that there was a landmark or important building around every corner. One could spend hours just walking around Dublin and there is always something new to see. I took a sightseeing tour from Dublin bus whch was good because it allowed me to get my bearings in the city, but walking is the best way. Sights include the GPO, Trinity College, St. Stephens Green, Four Courts, Christchurch Cathedral, and the Guniness Brewery. I will cover these with more detail inside my pages. My point is Dublin is a walkers paradise and is in my opinion the best way to see Dublin.

Wine, Women, and Song

I had heard that there were "1000 pubs in Dublin" and I don't know if it's true but I attempted to find out. The Dublin pub scene is very alive even after the nationwide smoking ban. I found that the bar hopping was excellent. People in Dublin go out earlier (6-7PM) and by 9 or 10 the pubs were pretty packed. Prices were not the best (4-5 Euro per pint) but it was worth it.
I'll go into more detail into subjects like tipping and rounds later in my pages. If your visiting Dublin and you can't find anything to do in the evening it's your own fault because there are SO many pubs and clubs to go to. So in a nutshell for the party tourist Dublin's nightlife will blow you away.

I know this is a bit dorky, pointing this out, but "hundreds of thousands" of Irish soldiers did not die in the Boer War.
