Paris - "City of Light"

by ChiTownMike - last update: Apr 28, 2004

Paris is simply a fantastic city. You really need to go there in order to fully appreciate it. There are plenty of sites to see in Paris and it is a great city for walking.

I stayed at the Hotel de Suez in the 5th arrondisement or Latin Quarter. I felt this was a great location, being only 1 block from the Sorbonne (one of the most famous universities in the world), and just a few blocks from the Luxembourg gardens and Notre Dame. Additionally, there are a number of restaurants in the area.

I was in Paris for just about 4 days. While it was enough time to get a feel for the city, I left knowing I could have spent 4 years there. Among the places I visited.

The Louvre. The famous art museum. Absolutely incredible (and massive in size). I am typically not a big art museum person and I was enthralled with it. A must see.

Tour Eiffel. Another Paris landmark. While I did not go to the top due to the long lines, it was still great to walk around.

Notre-Dame. Impressive for its size, history and windows.

Arc de Triomphe. While everyone has seen the Arc on TV, I didn't appreciate the size of it until I was standing just across the street. It also provides for a great vantage point to look down the famed Champs-Elysees.

Jardin des Tuileries. Next to the Louvre. A relaxing area to stroll through.

Jardin du Luxembourg. Another great place to stroll through. Unfortunately, it was late November when I was here so I did not see all the flowers. Another huge plus is that it is free!

Other places of interest that I missed: Musee d'Orsay (I was in line to go in when there was a security breach and they shut down the entire museum, Sacre Coeur (provides a great view of the city), Versailles (just outside Paris).

A stroll around Paris presents one with some of the most famous sights in the world.
Many of the highlights of the city can be at least seen for free.
