Spain has been a place I've wanted to go to for a long time. The opportunity finally came. So for my first trip, my sister and I decided on the Costa de Sol. We took a very short trip, only a total of 5 full days and 6 nights. We chose our base in Marbella (actually, the hotel was between Puerto Banus and San Pedro de Alcantara.) This pretty town on the Costa del Sol is a mix of old and new. The nice, clean beachfront is laden with high rise hotels, apartments, fancy restaurants, and expensive shops. The old town (Casco Antiguo) is a step back in time into a picturesque fishing village on the Mediterranean Sea. Although we didn't have much time, we did manage to go to Ronda and Tangier on this trip, so I will have pages on those places also.
Marbella literally means "beautiful sea" in Spanish. The difference between the Casco Antiguo and the beachfront filled with high rises is like night and day.
When I think of Andalucia, images of mesmerizing geometric patterned tiles, white washed walls, ornate iron railing, orange trees, and flowers hanging from balconies come to mind. Marbella, like many Andalucian towns, has Muslim origins, which is reflected in the architecture and decor.
- Pros:Very pretty, immaculately clean, and people are very friendly
- Cons:Expensive, but that was probably in the touristy spots
