Neuschwanstein is a famous castle and thus, very popular with tourists. Still, it's worth your time. My greatest advice is to order tickets in advance on the internet. This will save the average person a HUGE amount of time. You receive a voucher which you use to pick up your final tickets on the day of your tour. They can be picked up at a window with a short line, while everyone else is standing in a long queue trying to get same day reservations.
The castle is located high above the visitor's center. Most people take a bus or horse carraige to the castle. But beware, the horses drop you a couple hundred feet below the castle. I prefer the bus, it drops you above the castle near Marian Bridge. Take a bus at least one hour before your scheduled tour. That will give you time to walk out to the bridge and enjoyt the breathtaking view. Then you can walk down hill to the castle entrance.
After you tour, you can take the horse carraige down to the village at the base of the hill, or just walk for free. If you want to return to Fussen quickly, call a taxi. The public bus line only runs once each hour. I've heard of people having to wait in line for 2 hours before they finally got on the bus.
