"St.Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery" South Canaan by eugini2001

South Canaan is quite rural area and might have some interesting attractions, but for me it’s associated with St. Tikhon of Zadonsk Orthodox Monastery, which was founded in 1905-1906 by St. Patriarch Tikhon. “May 1906 witnessed the formal opening of St.Tikhon’s monastery, and in August the first patron feast was celebrated. After the throngs of pilgrims had returned from the grounds of the new Monastery and Orphanage to their homes, events and activities during the fall showed that financial challenges faced the two institutions, especially the orphanage“ (Our Diocese Alive in Christ, Orthodox church in America Magazine no1,spring 2007).Today there is no orphanage there, but there is a summer camp for children. It’s just a week away from home full of typical camp activities and Orthodox Christian encounter. Camp has traditions that include fishing (my daughter doesn’t like it much, she used to enjoy it at the age of 2 and 3,but now she prefers movies and popcorn ,so she watched “Monster‘s inc.” instead), piñata, the barbecue, hay-ride, an evening bonfire and hike to Flat Rock. My kid loved the lake and liked even more to canoe there, she did it almost everyday. She enjoyed socializing with priests, monks, counselors, children. She enjoyed it so much that she is eager to return next year and pushes me to register her now (a year in advance).It was nice to see her busy and happy there. Thanks to His Beatitude Herman, for having the vision those 39 years ago to set up the camp for children and to everyone , who keeps it alive.

Dormitory- a place for rest and sleep,they got up at 7.30AM and went to bed by 10 PM,that's all they needed this building for,the rest of the time they were busy bees flying around the camp.
