Getting away from it all | Matt and I with $1 million at Binion's Horseshoe |
Las Vegas is my favorite fantasy world, a place that I like to go to get away from it all, which in my case is a lovely small town in the mountains. When you live in the middle of beautiful scenery, getting away means going to the big city, and there's no city like Las Vegas. My first trip there was in December 1997 during the annual National PRCA Finals Rodeo when I was actually sent by my newspaper: our rodeo had been selected as one of the top 5 small town rodeos in the country; and a hometown girl was Miss Rodeo Oregon and in contention for Miss Rodeo America (she was second runner-up for the title). I had so much fun, and have been back three times, once with my then-14-year-old son Matt in 1998, and twice on solo trips. Hotels are relatively inexpensive, especially if you shop around on places like tavelaxe.com, and there's always lots to do and see. Many, many visitors have photos of themselves with the million dollars above: they used to be given away for the cost of a tip to the photographer. However, Binion's fell on hard times, sold the $1 mill. display, and went bankrupt. It was recently purchased from the ill-fated Binion family by the Harrahs chain. |
