A week in London

by ZanieOR - last update: Aug 28, 2004

The opening of a photo show ... Where's Mick??
A week in London as a lowly first-time tourist was a wonderful experience. I loved the history, the cultural differences, the parks, the energy, the Thames, the pubs (and pub signs), the little restaurants, the tube.
I know there’s been a million words said and a million photos taken of London, but everyone’s experience is unique and everyone has their own story to tell.
I had an absolutely wonderful time during my week in London. It was much too short, however, and could easily used another week just to enjoy the high points. What a city!
Flowers at Spitalfields market.
Saw many historic sites, museums, galleries and markets, but there were many that we just didn't have time to get to.
.
Me being a tourist at Hampton Court.
My traveling partner, Marilyn, had been to London before, and we re-visited many of her favorite places, starting with Westminister Abbey, and some that were new to her, including Hampton Court Palace and the London Eye. She'd already seen Tower of London twice, and thought it important I experience it, so I took off on the tube on my own while she walked to Sommerset House and spent the morning there.

My spirit was willing, but after six or seven hours a day on my feet a day, they started protesting (one morning I was practically hobbling), or we probably would have seen even more.
Started a collection of pub sign photos, to be continued on next visit. Loved the street life and the way everyone just kind of spills out of the pubs drinking beer on the warm summer evenings on the street corners. Came to the realization, however, that most of the world is now younger than I am.

Stayed in Covent Garden, within a block of the Seven Dials, and would highly recommend it. Lively, charming neighborhood without being Picadilly crazy. Several short blocks to tube stop from hotel, not far at all unless your feet are hurting

Pros:"Wealthy with history, art and culture, and vibrant with life."
Cons:"A week is not enough time to savor London."
In A Nutshell:"What a great city."
