Corniche in Alexandria
I have been to a few Egyptian town and cities and have to say that Alexandria, on the mediterranean coast is one of my favourites.
When we visited the weather was beautiful sunny, warm with a lovely sea breeze.

Founded by Alexander the Great, the population is now around 5 million and can get very busy on the roads but nowhere nearly as bad as Cairo.
One thing that I loved was the buildings along the Corniche, many of them built before the revolution but you can still see the beauty even though many need a bit of sprucing up.

Having arrived on the Sleeper train from Luxor, the contrast between the two was immense. Luxor is a very traditional town but in Alexandria you can see young couples, dressed in the latest fashions enjoying a drink in a cafe or holding hands whilst walking along the corniche. Many of these couples I presume were unmarried ,something you would rarely in Upper Egypt.
Fisherman at the Eastern Harbour
In Alexandria I found the people that we met to be very pleasant.

We were walking along the Corniche and sat on the wall was an old fisherman, smoking a fag. On his leg he had a line of tiny, dried out sea horses. I am not sure if they were for people to look at or he was trying to sell them but he was a very sweet man and was more than happy to have his picture taken.
Waleed in his Taxi.
In Alex the Taxi's are yellow and black Lada's and look like little bumble bees.
There was one particular Taxi driver called Waleed, who took us to a couple of places in Alexandria. He has always wanted to visit Luxor as he has read lots of books about the Tombs and was really interested that Adel came from there. He had never been anywhere apart from Alex and Cairo.
Many Egyptian never get the chance to go overseas but it also made me think how often we see more of other countries that we do of our own. I am from the England, only been up north once but have never been to Wales, Ireland or Scotland!
Anyway, I really hope that Waleed gets the chance to visit Luxor in the future!
