If you're tired of Cairo, you're tired of life.

If you're tired of Cairo, you're tired of life. I can't recall who said this but I think there is an element of truth in that. Love it or hate, Cairo appeals to all the senses, the sound of the prayers and the mad traffic, the smell of insense, car fumes, dust, the hustle and bustle of modern day Cairo.

One of the world's most populated area. Apparently if you live their it is the equivalent of having a 60 a day smoking habit due to the pollution. Over 16 million people live here and at times it feels like all 16 million are on the same road as you, travelling to the same destination. It is manic! If you fly to Cairo as opposed to going by train it really does hit it home how densly populated Cairo is in contrast to the stark desert beyond.
I have been to Cairo a few times, had a great time on every occasion but have always been happy to move on to the next town as it is a bit too busy for me. Part of the reason for this trip was to revisit the Pyramids as last time I had problems with my camera and to do some shopping (I love it). We found some lovely handicraft shops in Dokki, ceramics, water colour paintings, glassware etc. When we came back to Luxor on the sleeper train the compartment was overflowing with my shopping, we nearly had to sleep outside in the corridor!!

Obviously when you visit Cairo the must sees are The Pyramids, Cairo Museum, Khan El Khalili and Islamic Cairo but I guess if you are reading this page, you are interested in Egypt and probably know this already! Anyway, take a look at my travelogues to hear about my last 3 day trip in May 2004!
