Nuernberg, City of History

by bilgeez - last update: Oct 29, 2004

Nuernberg

Heilig Geist Hospital
I guess I like old cities. Regensburg has been around since the Roman Empire, Fulda, at least since the 8th Century, and Nuernberg since at least the 11th Century. Nuernberg is probably most famous for the Nazi rallies held here during the 30's and for the War Crimes Trials after WWII, which were held in the Palace of Justice, one of the few buildings remaining standing in the city, after being pounded by Allied bombing.
The Palace was hastily repaired right after the war so the trials could begin and did, In November, 1945.
About 80% of Nuernberg was destroyed during WWII, many of the buildings of antiquity are restored, as in most of Germany.
Nuernberg, as alluded to above, was a very important city even before the 20th Century. Other members have historical renderings in their pages, so I won't go into that, but if one takes a walk near the old city centre, one will find many interesting things. Nuernberg has some interesting statuary, as I have depicted below, in and around the famous, Kristkindlmarkt, the busiest market and shopping area in the city. Nuernberg is also home of the German Historical Museum, which is not far from the Kristkindlmarkt. Nuernberg also has a fine zoo.
Only bad thing I can find with Nuernberg is that the street traffic is very heavy even into the evening hours. If you drive there, be careful! But their public transit is very good, it includes; buses, trams and subway and goes everywhere in the city and nearby suburbs.

Pros:"Easy to get to, Lots to see and do."
Cons:"Lots of traffic!"
In A Nutshell:"Very Historical City, worth a look."
