Valhalla is the "Hall of Fame" of Germany. As you may know, in German folklore, Valhalla is heaven, the place of the residence of the gods. In this earthly Valhalla, all people who made major contributions to Germany, German Culture and western society are memorialized here, either with plaques, busts or statues. It is a "who's-who" of German history. Among the honored is Albert Einstein, who also is the only Jewish and Naturalized American Citizen to have a place here. There are so many others, I don't have space or memory to place names here, just go and see for yourself! As you can see, the building itself is an almost exact replica of the Parthenon in Athens. It is a monument to the German fascination of tying the mythological world to the real world and vice-versa. Admission a few years ago was about 7DM, so figure today about 4 Euro or so.

Address: North side of Danube, 3km east of Regensburg
Directions: Go north from city centre, across stone bridge, follow the signs. One can take a bike trail on the north side of the Danube to the foot of the Monument and walk uphill or take roads to it. It is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Things To Do: Regensburg Police Station

Huh? Why visit the main police station? Well because of one thing. The current main cop shop has a painting on the side of it of a knight holding a banner. The banner is red, and if one looks closely, one can faintly see the swastika that was painted over to the right centre of the banner. A remnant of the Nazi era. Just thought I'd share this with any WWII era history buffs.

The BMW factory in Regensburg gave tours there on certain days of the week. They may still, it was very interesting. The tour guide spoke excellent English. The plant is south of the city in an industrial area. City buses do go there, but one has to pay the extra fare for a "Fernfahrt" as it is away from the city. Check BMW's website to see if they have tour info. If I find any better info in my "archives" I will add it in here.
