  • The foundation stone of this Baroque citadel was laid in 1665 year. It was a closter and citadel at the same time. The citadel is sittuated on a hill. The walls around it are ca. 2 km long and to 21 m high. You must go upstairs and from the citadelhill you can admire the beautiful panorama of the city.
The citadel was renovated after 1990 and today the greater part of its casemates, esplanades and bastions inside the fortification area is open for visitors.

  • This is the only extensively preserved city fortifications in central Europe. A special experience is an exploratory tour of the extensive mine labyrinth at the late hour when the casamates and mine passages are illuminated. There are many exhibitions, par example the "Concrete Art" and concerts. In August 2008 will be on the Petersberg the oper "Aida" of Verdi. I think this will be great.

  • St. Severus was built in year 1280 and it is a medieval five-nave Gothic hall church. You can see here the sandstone sarcophagus of St Severus dating from 1363 and the alabaster relief of St. Michael from 1467.

  • The German Gothic Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the St. Severus Church created together an unique ensamble and are the most famous landmarks of Erfurt. . In the Cathedrale (Mariendom) there is situated the 12-ton heavy "Queen of Bells" - The "Gloriosa" (1497). You must see too the stained-glass windows from the 14th century and the triptychon altar "Unicorn Hunt".

  • The very interesting example of secular architecture in Erfurt is Merchants’ Bridge (The Krämerbrücke). This is an arched stone bridge over the Gera river and it was constructed in 1325 like a part of "via regia" trading route: Kiev - Wroclaw - Erfurt - Frankfurt am Main. In its place was in year 1117 a former wooden bridge. Very interesting is that this bridge is the only example for a bridge consisting of houses north of the Alps mountain. The restored group of houses is dating from the 15th to 19th century. In the houses are now art galleries and crafts, souvenirs, antiques, music and wine shops. On the end of this bridge you can see the Ägidienkirche. From the tower of this church can you admire the great panorama of Erfurt. This is the longest bridge of Europe, wich have houses along its entire length.

  • The evangelic - methodist church on the end of the Kraemerbruecke. The capelle was here in 1110 year. You can see the great panorama of Erfurt of the top of the church tower. In the tower there are too 2 old bells, the one of 1382 y. and the other - I don´t know..... Now it serves residential purposes. The archway is a connection between Wenigemarkt and Kraemerbruecke.

  • One of the distinctive features of Erfurt is the monumental ensamble of Mariendom and Severikirche. If you want see the great panorama of the Catedral Square you must go upstairs to the Cathedral. Around this square there are some restaurants ans shops, and beautiful colorfull houses.
In the week there on this square is a basar, you can buy there fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, flowers and many more.

The monastery have an important library with old rare books. You can see here a permanent exhibition about Luther´s life and his times. Very interesting are too the stained glass windows of the 14th century.
