My wife nd I stayed at the Mark Hopkins for 7 nights. We received excellent service from all of the hotel personnel even though our room had been booked through Hotwire.com. The rooms were slighty smaller than newer facilities but the service and decor made up for it. We received free local and 800 calls because of the length of our stay. The hotel also provides nightly turn down service and the attendant filled the ice bucket each night. The room was immaculate and kept exceptionally clean throughout our stay. The concierge was one of the best I have ever used. He secured a rental car for me at an excellent price, had it brought to the hotel, and secured an upgrade to a premium vehicle at no extra charge. He even offered to return the car for us if we returned to the hotel by 5 pm. If I were going to SF I would definitely stay at the Mark Hopkins!
Unique Qualities: The MH has an exceptional fitness center (as if you needed one after walking the hills of SF). Towels, water, music, etc. were all provided in the fitness center. The business center was also exceptional.

Directions: Located on top of Nob Hill, one of the finer districts of SF. The Cal. cable car stops outside the main entrance. The Mason-Hyde & Mason-Powell cable car lines are 1 block down the hill. Easy going down but you have to work coming back up!
