"The beauty of the Baltic" Riga by Blondiina

Riga is a very compact city, at least from a tourist's perspective, which makes it a perfect destination for a weekend break. If you're staying in the old town or in its vicinity, everything is within walking distance: the sights, the restaurants, the shopping and other places of interest.

There is a lot of building work and renovation going on and in general the buildings seemed to be good condition. But on the other hand, the next street could be in despair with houses falling apart. This gave Riga an interesting mixed feeling.

The old town is beautiful with its cobbled stone streets, cafes, churches and other buildings. All you need can be practically found here, no need to venture out if you don't want to. The old town seems to be full of people regardles of time or day and it still manages to remain its charm.

Separating the old town from the new is a beautiful park area. It is the perfect place to sit and do some people watching while enjoying the warm summer weather. The parks are well tended with plenty of flower arragements, statues and fountains.

Rigans do love flowers and you could see people walking with pretty bouquets all around the town. Flower stalls dot the streets selling the most beautiful bunches you've ever seen and they cost only a fraction of what you'd pay at home. Too bad I couldn't buy them as souvenirs.

If you desire to do some shopping, Riga will not disappoint you. You can choose from small boutiques to huge malls and from simple stuff to designer goods. In general prices are lower than in the Western Europe if you're not looking for top end designer wear. Shoes are of a particularly good value and there are plenty of shops around selling georgeous footwear. Makes you just wonder that if there are that lovely shoes available outthere then why are shoes in Finland so ugly. One of life's mysteries for a shoeaholic...

Riga seemed like a very safe city and I guess they really want tourist as well as locals to feel that way as there were lots of policemen on foot around. And in the old town, there were always so many people around that you didn't feel isolated.

Kivat sivut, vinkeistä on varmasti apua tulevalla reissulla, varsinkin joku noista ravintoloista ja kahviloista on testattava!

Wonderful pics and tips on Riga Piia :) I went some time ago before the days of digital camera's so my pics aren't half as good. Still enjoyed Riga though, :) Regards ~Fen
