A place to relax

by Blondiina - last update: Oct 13, 2004

Sunset in Buray Bay
When we decided to go to Langkawi, we just wanted to go somewhere beautiful to relax. And this turned out to be just the place for us. You can relax and do nothing if you want, but there's a lot to do, too, if you wish for some action.

Beaches are really beautiful and there are no sandflies. Thank god...But there is jellyfish...not a pleasant encounter...my boyfriend has still marks on his leg allthough a year has passed. Water clarity is not that good, which makes awoiding jellyfish and like quite difficult.

Food is delicious in Langkawi and it won't cause you to go bankrupt. Off course hotel restaurants are a bit more expencive, but affordable too. If you eat, where the locals do, you get your tummies full really cheaply. And we had the most delicious satays at a local night market.

If you like shopping, there are lots of interesting things to buy. You can get beautiful batik and wood carvings at reasonable prices. There are also clothes, cosmetics, electronics etc. Alcohol is very cheap in shops. One litre of Bacardi rum cost about 4 euros. But wine is expencive.
Pantai Cenang mainroad
Many times it seemed that outside Kuah all the life stops during the day. It was hard to find a place to eat that was open during the day in Pantai Cenang. And usually there were no tourists at sight . Everyone was at the beach. But in the evenings, when sun had gone down, it was different. There were quite a lot of tourists around looking for a place to eat etc. Not much nightlife though, but we didn't miss it. And it wasn't crowded anywhere.

If you want action there's a lot to choose from: watersports, golf, shopping, Underwater world, crocodile farm, different tours etc. Or you can just rent a car or a moped and drive around sightseeing. Roads are generally in good condition.
Malay house
Langkawi is a very beautiful island and the nature there is quite versatile too. You can see lots of different animals: birds, lizards, monkeys. I used to be scared of lizards, but here I got used to them and in the end found them extremely fascinating. It was entertaining to see them and watch what they were up to. I'm not scared of them anymore and now I'm even dreaming of having a gecko or some other lizard as a pet someday. (When I know enough about them.) Silver leaf monkeys were a nother highlight for us and they visited our hotel on several occations. They are so cute!

All though tourism is a major source of income in Langkawi, it is concentrated just to certain areas of the island. You can still see plenty of traditional village life and enjoy scenery undisturbed by tourism.

Hi, I' m Malaysian looks like our seasonal fruits that were forbidden by any resort in Malaysia. The story is this kind of fruits will come out with bad smell to stranger’s people. :) But to me it doesn’t matter the aroma will boost my appetite Aha : )
