Why now? | Aya Sofia, rising out of a steel-grey morning |
Admittedly Turkey was never at the top of my must-do list. Maybe it was the package-holiday hordes descending upon the coasts, or a few lingering doubts about the regime and its human rights record, but until this summer I’d never really had a reason to go.
Then a friend of mine moved there.
And some other friends of mine coincidently began planning a trip.... |
| Fethiye; bustling and suprisingly bearable resort |
| | And why I'll go back ...Suddenly I had a whole number of reasons to aim a flight in that direction.
After several days, I wondered why I’d never headed here before. Get out of the cities and it’s great backpacker fodder; a country steeped in history, welcoming locals, wonderful food and a fascinating, evolving culture. As long as you don’t make a beeline for the resorts it’s a great value destination, on all levels. Definitely one to put on the list. |

| Pros: | "History at every turn, great food, fascinating cultural mix, great value..." | | Cons: | "Inevitable stomach bugs, some 'over friendly' locals, blatant sexism, lethal drivers..." | | In A Nutshell: | "As long as you don't aim for the resorts, it's a contrasting, evolving country steeped in history" |

MalenaN Sat Mar 11, 2006 06:22 UTC Turkey is a great country to travel in. I have done so twice, but have so far never been to Olympos. |
