In a city, nay a region, largely devoid of decent café culture Peaberry’s is a rallying cry. No longer shall we endure chintzy décor, the company of gossiping grandmothers and a raised eyebrow when we ask for something so simple as a latte…

All the main blends of coffee/tea are covered; the food is great quality and the day/evening menus sufficiently large and varied to keep even the pickiest types happy. Whereas down south you’d be required to mortgage your house for lunch, up here in the infinitely more sensible north it’s surprisingly good value. The décor is bright, warm and decorated with local artists work that’s available to buy if you take a particular shine to something. The staff are generally cheerful and the soundtrack pleasantly funky but not, overbearingly so. There’s plenty of sofas upstairs too if you’re in a ‘Friends’ kind of mood. It’s such an endearing place, once you’ve been it’s hard to go shopping in Hull and not gravitate here at some point. Should you find yourself here in the evening the place dims the lights and becomes a truly cosy little Tapas Bar. If you have a date, it may help melt her/his heart...

Favorite Dish: Ooo, the Chicken Tang or Turkey & Brie baguettes...

Restaurant Name: Pave

‘Pave’ is a great stop for coffee, good food or a funky bar vibe if you find yourself in the Princes Avenue area. Real ale, fine wines and great food can be enjoyed in a suitably modern and vibrant atmosphere and it’s all good value. Also satisfying is that it’s an independent venture by the same people who run the equally great ‘Peaberrys’ coffeehouse and ‘The Lamp’ pub/bar further in towards the city centre. It’s one in the eye for the relentless march of the national chains. Check the events programme whiles you’re they’re as they also host everything from author readings to live music covering a variety of styles.

Restaurant Name: Planet Coffee

Granted it's some way out of the centre of town (er, about 40 mins walk in fact) but if you find yourself on Newland Avenue - or in the 'Avenues' part of town as some call it - 'Planet Coffee' is a great place to get a hit of caffeene. All the usual styles & blends supported by a fine range of sandwiches, cakes & things. There's usually a funky soundtrack playing and the crowd is pleasant enough and mostly studenty (it being in the 'studentsville' area of town).

Restaurant Name: Fashion:Coffee

Fashon:Coffee has just recently opened on Carr Lane. It’s definitely a very stylish new place aiming to attract a hip crowd, but therein lays the problem: it’s rather small to say the least. It may attract a crowd, but a rather claustrophobic one. But that aside, the coffee & food is good quality. I’d still go for the original Hull coffeehouse-pioneers Peaberries myself (out of personal taste and loyalty), a few doors up on the corner of Ferensway, but this isn’t a bad second choice a all. Worth checking out.

Restaurant Name: May Sum Buffet King

Definitely recommended if you want a decent meal out that won't torpedo your budget. Good value 'all you can eat' buffet-style Chinese food, located conveniently right in heart of the city. Great place to meet up after work it's a buzzing place most days.
