New York, and Old York... | Statue of Roman Emperor Constantine |
York, like many of the UK's premiere cities is positively dripping with history from every wall. Having evolved millennia on from the Viking city of Jorvik, through the Roman Invasion and the British dynasties down the ages, York still manages to combine its lavish history with the best of today's cosmopolitan culture. More-or-less halfway up the country to Scotland it should be an essential part of any tour of these isles. |

| | There's more to the UK than London Sadly so many visitors to the UK seem to land in the country and judge it from within the mayhem of Heathrow and the undeniably impressive, yet staggeringly unrepresentative world-class city of London. Within all the VT pages on York are hundreds of reasons to head north and discover a real northern city. |

| Pros: | "York Minster, City Walls, historic buildings, great shopping" | | Cons: | "Too many 'Heraldry' shops, a small gripe really..." | | In A Nutshell: | "One of the finest cities in the north, if not the UK..." |
