York, like many of the UK's premiere cities is positively dripping with history from every wall. Having evolved millennia on from the Viking city of Jorvik, through the Roman Invasion and the British dynasties down the ages, York still manages to combine its lavish history with the best of today's cosmopolitan culture. More-or-less halfway up the country to Scotland it should be an essential part of any tour of these isles.
Sadly so many visitors to the UK seem to land in the country and judge it from within the mayhem of Heathrow and the undeniably impressive, yet staggeringly unrepresentative world-class city of London. Within all the VT pages on York are hundreds of reasons to head north and discover a real northern city.

I liked York, even if I only was there for an afternoon (too short I know!). One day I hope to go back `-) is there still a pub called the Black Sheep (was it not the name of a beer?)
