Getting TO/AROUND: If you want flexibility, one good option is to take taxis. Fare begins at RMB 10,00 (US$ 1,2) with additional RMB 1,30 / km for the basic taxis (red coloured, usually small taxis), or RMB 1,60 / km for middle range taxis (green or blue cars with a golden stripe). There is still a higher range of taxis, normally black sedans without any sign. They are around 50% more expensive than the middle range ones. Be aware that you may also be caught in a tourist trap in the main tourist attractions...

Getting TO/AROUND: This turned to be a comfortable way to travel to Beijing. From where I live, Changchun, you can take the night train to Beijing, at at least a third of the price of a plane ticket. Travel takes 8 hours. I think that the same applies to other cities around Beijing. From Shanghai, for example, the trip takes 12 hours... Give it a try...

Getting TO/AROUND: Look for this sign and you will find a Beijing subway station. There are basically two lines: red line along the Jianguomen Dajie/Changan Dajie (east-west) and blue line, making a circle around the old town.
