History & Beaches

Cebu is an interesting tourism destination since it offers both historical highlights and world class resorts, breathtaking beaches and diving opportunities.

During our short stay in Cebu we could not unfortunately enjoy the beaches or diving getaways.

However we had the opportunity to discover a historical Cebu the best way, just as normal "tourists": walking around.

Cebu has been an important trade centre in the Philippines since before the 15th century. Chinese, Cambodians and Arabs were already around even before the European explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521.

On his way back from his circunavigation trip, Magellan arrived on these shores. Upon the success of Christianizing the people of Cebu, Magellan crossed the channel of Mactan Island in attempt to Christianize the people there.

Before reaching the shore in knee-deep waters, Magellan got killed in battle against Lapu-lapu, the local Chieftain of Mactan Island. It was believed that Magellan got hit by a poisoned dart on his leg which led him to his fateful end.

Worth visiting are Fort San Pedro, a Spanish fortification on the pier area, the beautiful churches like the Basilica Minore del Santo and NiƱo and the Cathedral, and typical farm houses from Spanish colonial times.

Have fun!

The shrine sits right across the entrance to the Sto Nino church. Around the entrance old ladies in yellow skirts offer candles and they say a prayer in your behalf for a small donation

Nice page! Lots of Spanish influence here. Why is the 'Carbon Market' so called? It's a bizarre name!

A good deal on asiahotels.com A good hotel but not so near the beaches of Mactan. Ask a taxi driver for a daily rate to tour around. With a tip, no more than 1000 peso is a good deal for both.

Quite a hote/casino, Alexandre. Some great pages with good information and helpful hints. Some of the architectural features here are marvelous.
