Rome is well known for pickpockets and so anytime you are using the public transportation, be aware of your surroundings. It doesnt mean you have to be suspicious about every person that rides with you in the train or bus but having a good grip on your belongings particularly when its very crowded.

When you have luggage and use the public transportation, make sure that you dont sit next to the door. Move to either the middle of the compartment or prefer the corner if you can find space there.

Rome is also known for the high rate of auto theft or auto break-ins and so for people who rent cars, these are some tips to consider.

If you are carrying any luggage in the car, dont leave them on the back seat. Put them in the boot (Trunk) and dont leave any traces for any valuables on the car visibly for anyone to get nosy. One of the things lot of travelers do is buy a local newspaper and throw it on the passenger seat or on the dashboard to give the impression that the car owner is a local and not a tourist.

Another popular theory is buy a sticker for one of the local sports teams and stick it giving the impression that you are a local. Any visible sign in the car that gives the impression of a tourist or a visitor is an invitation for theft/break-in.

For rental cars, theft insurance is mandatory and so cant be avoided.
