Madras, recently rechristened Chennai is the biggest city in South India. The southern port city is also one of the 4 major metropolis of India which serves as the center for visiting a specific region.
Madras is also one of the oldest cities in India. As a city, unless you are a resident, this place is likely to drive you nuts unless you slow down and take your time to explore this city. The public transportation in Madras is very efficient in that you can find a train or bus to go to anyplace without any fuss. The Madras international airport is a reasonably decent sized airport and is located just outside the city. It takes about 45 minutes from the airport to get into the city center. The airport also has a local train station just a bit outside but unless you are not carrying heavy luggage, this wont be an option unlike the European cities. Trains are frequent and can take you to the city area in about 30 minutes.
Madras is also the nerve center of Southern India. Recently, Bangalore is slowly eroding into that claim even though Bangalore is slightly smaller compared to Madras. Madras is also well connected to the rest of India through Indian Railways. Madras has two major rail termini, one at Madras Central and the other at Madras Egmore. Madras Central serves as the terminus for trains that serve the Eastern, Western and Northern India. Madras Egmore serves the Southern Region. |
