"Vancouver Island" Vancouver Island by JanPeter74

Vancouver Island Travel Guide: 230 reviews and 697 photos

Vancouver Island lies off the coast of Vancouver. The Island is more than 500 kilometres long and some 80 kilometres wide and is a bit of a small scale version of western Canada. We only visited the southern half of the island, with the town of Victoria (capital of British Columbia) at its southern tip. Click here for more info on Victoria.

There are three major ferry services to reach the island. Vancouver --> Victoria; Vancouver --> Nanaimo (1.5 hours drive north of Victoria); Washinton State (USA) --> Victoria. All these passages take about 1.5 hours.

The island is famous for whalewatching. Killerwhales (Orcas) from Victoria and Gray Whales from Tofino on the West Coast in the Pacific Rim National Park. This NP is also popular for stormwatching in the fall. Another popular destination are the beaches facing east just north of Nanaimo and Parksville.

Victoria Island is certainly a very scenic place. What a pity about the lack of success with whalewatching!

Whalewatching became such an attraction and even whales want to be paid :) but I do not think I should go and see that. I am against disturbing them in their lives...
