Of course that fact that this was our honeymoon destination and our first trip outside of Europe as well added to the romance, but Bali is in one word GREAT!
We stayed for two full weeks in the Bali Hyatt hotel in Sanur, which is superb and is said to have the most beautiful garden of Bali. So if you are prepared to spend some extra money on a once in a lifetime honeymoon experience, go to the Bali Hyatt (5 stars). Eating out can best be done outside the hotel. Plenty of nice and cheap restaurants are close-by.
Although we visited lots of places in Bali, I decided that it is easiest to simply make one Bali page, with all the great places added as must see activity tips. So it is a long list of tips, but nevertheless very useful. At least I hope.
For a photo impression of the Bali Hyatt hotel see my travelogues.
Lots of Hindu temples and other Hindu architecture. Fantastic beaches and coasts. One of the number 1 surfspots in the world. Mountains, vulcanos and lakes. Beautiful ricefields. Great snorkeling opportunities. the artist village of Ubud and the adjacent Monkey Forest, great hotels, good food, etc. and last but not least great people.
The island of Bali is located just east of Java and measures about 175 miles (W-E) by 100 miles (N-S). The western half of the island is less interesting. Most hotels are located on the peninsula to the south with in the centre of the peninsula the capital Denpasar (airport).
Kuta is the vibrant party and shopping town on the west side of the peninsula, with great waves and surfing opportunities and the beach facing west (sunset).
Sanur is more relaxed and has lots of luxurious hotels but misses a bit of a real towncenter. Sanur lies on the east side of the peninsula (so great for facing the sunrise). There is a reef just off the coast here, so hardly any real waves and rather shallow water for the first hundreds of feet. By the way, it is rather easy, cheap and fast to take a taxi from Sanur to Kuta and the other way around.
Finally Nusa Dua lies on the southern tip of the peninsula and is more a collection of luxurious hotels than a real town/village. So the best location to stay depends on what you are looking for.
- Pros:Too much to tell
- Cons:A long flight from Europe
- In a nutshell:A bit of paradise on earth
