Bootham Bar gate with York Minster in the back
When walking in the around the inner city of York, lots of remnants of the old city wall can still be seen. And a walk along and on the walls really makes you step back in time for a while. Moreover, three major gates can be found, Bootham Bar, Monk Bar and Micklegate Bar. In the picture you can see Bootham Bar with the York Minster in the background, which is really a fantastic view.
Clifford's Tower
Apart from the Minster, one of the most important landmarks of the city is Clifford’s tower, located in the city centre as well. The tower was built by Henry III, around 1300 AD and stands on a high mound erected earlier by William the Conqueror. This mound was the scene of one of the most terrible events in the history of York. In 1190, the Jews of York were attacked by a local mob and took refuge in the then wooden tower. They were given the choice to either be baptised or killed. However, being surrounded, they decided to commit mass suicide. Afterwards the wooden tower was burned and later replaced by this stone tower. From the tower you have a great view over the city with the Minster towering over it. Street scene in York
Apart from all the things to see, York has also a very nice atmosphere. Many, bars, restaurants and shops (including lots of giftshops of course) embedded in the historical setting of the inner city create the perfect place for a relaxed afternoon. Bring your camera here as well, since every street seems to be worth another picture. In one of the narrow streets, you can find the “Shambles”, very old houses, leaning dangerously towards you when you are in front of them.
Part of the inside of York Minster
From the outside you will easily see that this cathedral is an enormous building. Once inside, you will nevertheless again be amazed by the size of it. Everything in this building is designed to impress, the stone structures, the wooden choir and the stained glass windows. So really take some time to have a look inside.
York Minster
York Minster is a really giant cathedral and you have to take some proverbial steps back to be able to see it at its full size. This is the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and dates back to the 13th century. The cathedral was built on the place where another church stood, dating from a period that goes back some more centuries. Both on the outside as well as on the inside you will be amazed by this building with all its details and richness.
