Vaasa, a diversified town by the sea

by linda1501 - last update: Aug 11, 2004

Vaasa from the sky
Vaasa is the spiritual heart of Ostrobothnia, open to all. It´s the biggest town in the area with over 57.000 inhabitants 72 % Finnish-speaking, 25 % Swedish-speaking and 3 % with other languages as their mother tongue.

Vaasa is located at the narrowest point of the gulf of Bothnia, only 80 km/50 miles from Umeå in Sweden. By boat the journey takes four hours.

In Vaasa the past and the present meet: local enterprises, distinctive cultural life, two languages, international industry and the tranquility of a small town.

The sea with its countless islands gives Vaasa the authentic feel of a coastal town. Boating, fishing, exploring the archipelago and taking exercise along the beautiful shore are all popular with the townspeople.

And as Vaasa is Finland's sunniest town, the sun is often shining too.
Vaasa offers a wealth of attractions for the visitor to indulge in, including historic sights, captivating museums, the fun- filled Wasalandia amusement park and the relaxing Tropiclandia spa paradise. The coastal city characterised by parks and wide boulevards is surrounded by an extensive archipelago.
Vaskiluoto - a paradise island for the whole family - The ferry operating between Vaasa and Umeå, Sweden, sails from the port of Vaskiluoto. - The Wasalandia amusement park, the Tropiclandia spa paradise and excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation are to be found close to the port. - Top Camping Vaasa, one of the best camping sites in Finland and part of the Top Camping chain, is situated by the sea. - In summer you can go on a city sightseeing tour on the Lilliputti town train or take a cruise in the archipelago from the Inner Harbour. - You can also charter a boat for a cruise to the outer archipelago.
