Hiroshima

by Ines28 - last update: Jul 10, 2005

The first thing that comes in mind when hearing the name "Hiroshima" is of course the atomic bomb that was dropped on the city on 6 August 1945. But although the Peace Memorial Park is the place every visitor goes to, Hiroshima is far from being a depressive place. On the contrary, it has become a thriving new city whose optimistic inhabitants seldom mention the bomb.
Therefore it's a pity that obviously most tourist groups don't go any further than the A-Bomb Dome as Hiroshima has a lot more to offer: beautiful and peaceful parks, the impressive Castle or the busy shopping arcade, for example.
For us, it was the very first destination in Japan, and it was a good choice. We were amazed to read that Hiroshima has more than a million inhabitants, to us it seemed smaller, the atmosphere was relaxed and it's easy to navigate the city on foot or by streetcar.

There were very useful comments for us, so we are going to Hiroshima end of this month. Thank you for your great tips! I prefer Hiroshima's "Okonomi-yaki" to Osaka's. Especially "Otafuku" sause flavour is best one.

Thanks for sharing your experiences in Hiroshima. I too am a fan of okonomiyaki. I'm curious how it would taste with soba!
