KL is a thriving city whose mega malls and vertigo-inspiring towers are balanced by verdant expanses of grass and rows of palm trees. It is a perfect mixture of old and new, old colonial architecture in front of gleaming high-rise office blocks and the former highest building of the world. Another thing makes this city so special and interesting: the blend of cultures - a Malay capital with a vibrant Chinatown, an Indian quarter and a cricket field in the middle of the city. KL started in the 1860s when a band of prospectors in search of tin landed at the meeting point of the Sungai Kelang and Sungai Gombak and named it Kuala Lumpur (Muddy Estuary). The lure of ore quickly turned KL into a noisy boom town, successively tempered by the rule of sultans, the British and finally, UMNO. I have been to KL three times now, and it is definitely a city I like to return to again and again. It is always interesting to observe the changes and improvements over the years, e.g. five years ago you had to keep your eyes fixed on the ground or you would have fallen in a hole in the ground or over pipes and stones, now the pavements are perfectly even and you get the opportunity to watch people and the surroundings while walking!
