Rieti is really a small jewel of a city. Located in a bowl-shaped valley on the left bank of the Velino river, it was built by the Romans in what used to be swampland before Italy's tallest waterfall (Marmore) was created. Strolling on foot through the quiet streets of Rieti is a pleasure, especially in warm springtime evenings. |

| | The gateway to Rome's mountain Rieti is mostly known as the gateway to Terminillo, or Rome's mountain as it's normally referred to. Just over an hour's drive north of the capital, it's an excellent retreat from the chaos of the capital in the summer, as well as one of central Italy's best equipped ski resorts in the winter. |
