"Appletreewick - A great base for exploring t'Dales" Appletreewick by suvanki
Appletreewick Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 68 photos
Appletreewick is a small Wharfedale village, in the parish of Craven close to Skipton, Grassington, Bolton Abbey and many other treasures.
There's not much here, but it has one of the best camping sites that I've been to, and one of the best pubs too! (There is another hostelry a short stagger away, but we liked The Craven Arms so much, that we didn't get to discover the delights of The New Inn.
When I say that there's not much here, that's its attraction! Unspoilt countryside in abundance, which attracts hikers, cyclists and people who just want to relax.
It is on The Dales Way, (an 80 mile long distance walk from Ilkley (12 miles away from Appletreewick) to Bowness in Windermere) So this is the usual place for walkers to stop for the first night, either camping or staying at the New Inn, or other nearby accommodation.
The New Inn boasts 'The first Mountain Bike livery'
It is steeped in history though - Many of the stone houses and halls date back to the 17th Century.
One of its former residents - Sir William Craven was to become Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London, in the early 17th Century. Portraits of him, hang in the pub that bears his name - The Craven Arms. He actually owned this Inn.
Alyf1961 organised our 2nd Ooop North weekend camping meet, which co-incided with Skipton's Sheep Day on the Sunday.
Alyf1961, Myfanwe, Gillybob, DAO and myself braved the elements - Yes, we experienced rain, gusts of wind, more rain and even some hot sunshine, as well as more rain.
We'd chosen our camp site, for its location and...... they provide fire pits - It's not a VT camping meet without a fire.
Sadly, the Weather Gods, decided that we could only have a 'token gesture' fire on the Friday evening - not hot enough to sit around - Ah well - we took refuge in The Craven Arms on two occasions - eating a meal there on the Saturday night.
A short drive from the camp site is the photogenic town of Grassington, which was enjoying the last day of its annual Festival.
On the way back, a 'detour' (OK, I missed the turning!) took myself and Gilly to the pretty village of Linton ( complete with a village green, and ancient bridges as well as its historical chapel and almshouses) and Burnsall, where we visited the very interesting St Wilfrid's church, complete with a Viking museum, and plenty of architectural interest.
Sunday, after being woken by the early morning, loud bleatings of our woolly neighbours we headed to Skipton, to enjoy the festivities of 'Sheep Day' with other VTers and their guests.
The route from Appletreewick to Skipton took us past Bolton Abbey, where I'd visited in 2008 after my first VT meet - Ricky52's legendary' Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas'.
So, a great location, with plenty of nearby attractions - and linked by bus services from Skipton or Ilkley!
Appletreewick was established around 1300, when its manor was purchased by Bolton Abbey. Lead mines and sheep rearing, being the source of prosperity, which led to charters being granted for markets and fairs
At nearby Hebden, there is a Bronze Age stone circle, known as Fancarl Top Circle - apparently there are good views from here to Appletreewick!
- Pros:Scenic, good location for exploring
- Cons:Come prepared for all weathers, 'The Sheep Alarm' and or Dawn Chorus
- In a nutshell:A lovely spot, I'll be back!

What a lovely landscape! And that toilet :-)
So you all went to the Pub - AFTER - I left?
You can have all the paper sticks and firelights you like, use a great lighter - but if the wood isn't placed correctly, you won't have a great campfire! Simples! And what's with all the sunshine photos on the campsite tip? You been photoshopping? ;-) Gillybob greetings
