Dipping my toe into Bath!

by suvanki - last update: Jul 10, 2007

Bath

Water Feature, Bath
Spending a few days in Bristol for a meeting, I decided to take advantage of an open return train ticket to extend my stay, to explore more of Bristol, and make a first time (long awaited) visit to Bath.

Arriving by train, I headed for the sights of Bath, stopping off at the small tourist info office in the bus station.

My initial plan was to visit The Roman Baths, Pump Room, Sally Lunns tea room, The Royal Crescent, and Poultney Bridge, and try a milk shake at Shakers, These being the few places that I knew of in Bath. I was on a tight budget, and had just under 6 hours to experience this ancient city.

I soon found myself following the signposts to The Pump Rooms. Here, I noted a sign for guided tours at 1400hrs. I decided this would be a good opportunity to learn about Bath and its attractions.

So, I set off at a near sprint to find my first 'to do' - After having to ask directions a couple of times, I'd soon ticked my 1st box - Milkshake - Mmmmmmm! Fortified, I was off , 2 hours to wait til the tour started.

Criss crossing Bath, I enjoyed my first sighting of the impressive Poultney Bridge straddling the River Avon, walking along the bridge, resisting the urge to sample the delicacies of the Riverside cafe ,( though it would have been nice to enjoy a pot of tea viewing the river from a seat by the window), I enjoyed a spot of window shopping , and spent a short while browsing the old fashioned Pharmacists shop. Recrossing the bridge (I later learnt I should have continued a bit further along, as I missed Great Pultney Street - Baths' most magnificent residential Street at 100ft wide and 1,100ft long) I found myself in Baths Guildhall Market.
