"Lovere - Lago D' Iseo" Lovere by suvanki

Lovere Travel Guide: 16 reviews and 63 photos

Lovere is situated on the western shore of Lago d' Iseo at its northern tip. It is a scenic location (if you ignore the steel factory on the lakeside).

Lovere was once noted as a Venetian textile centre, and there is still evidence of the Venetian era around the town - you'll find examples of the Venetian winged Lion in bas reliefs on some of the buildings around the old town.

During the period of Venetian domination, Lovere prospered. Production of the 'panno grezzo' clothing led to lucrative export deals, particularly in the German speaking countries.

This new found affluence was reflected in the construction of ornate villas and houses beyond the medieval walled town. Donations enabled churches, including the Basilica of Santa Maria in Valvendre to be built or reconstructed and decorated with works of art by leading craftsmen.

Skirting the lakeside is the Piazza X111 Martiri, the centre of the town, with bars, cafes and restaurants
