Christmas on Murano | Glass workers mosaic Murano |
I had a shock to realise that it was nearly 30 years since I'd last set foot on the island of Murano - that was as part of a day trip to Venice, which included the obligatory 'glass works visit', which I don't really remember much about, apart from a sleezy 'guide' who asked one of my friends to guess what was the most expensive piece on display - if she guessed correctly, she could have a free gift - if she lost, she had to give him a kiss - Hmmmmm! Christmas Eve 2006, the waterbus from the airport had stopped on Murano, but it was dark, so it wasn't until my visit in June 07 that I saw the island in daylight, but again from the Vaporetto, as I travelled to and from Sant Erasmo, where I was staying.
Christmas Day 2007, I finally stepped onto Murano - It was cold, starting to go dark and I was hungry, so I just ventured as far as the church of San Pietro Martire, had a look at the nativity scene and the paintings by Bellini, before catching the vaporetto back to Fondamente Nuova. Murano had been devoid of the hoards of tourists I was expecting. The next day, I returned, after spending a few hours wandering around the cemetery Island of San Michele. To be continued.... |
