Booked online, this hotel looked full of character, and very reasonably priced too. I paid £67 for 3 nights in a single room with buffet breakfast included!!
Advertised as 'Le confort de l'Hotel de luxe au prix de l'Hotel economique'
I wasn't disappointed!
I checked in after having spent the past 11 days in Morocco, travelling around part of it as a group tour, during which time I'd slept in 7 different accommodations including a tented bivouac in the desert and a mattress on the floor of a gite. I was ready for a bit of comfort.
Arriving by taxi, I entered into an inner 'courtyard' with fountain, and brightly painted walls and furniture. A huge lamp hung down from the ceiling 6 stories up. I was handed a huge iron key (this was the key ring) and shown to room 59a. (There are lifts) Apparently mine was a 3* room, there are 4 and 5* too (check the web page for pics)
A canopied 4 poster bed, painted furniture including a writing desk, stained glass windows, fresh flowers, air con and TV.
Bathroom with bath and over bath shower, WC, bidet
Freebies - shower gel, shampoo, tissues, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and scalp massager!
Buffet breakfast - orange juice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, pastries, pancakes, olives, cucumber, salami, cereals, dates, bread and preserves etc.
Tea salon
Unique Qualities: Small pool was pleasant, although in September, the sun had disappeared by about 3.30 pm. The roof terrace had a few sun loungers. They were in process of renovating, what I think was a rooftop restaurant. Afraid that the views weren't too exciting from the terrace
I visited the hammam in the basement for a soap and scrub (1 hour -180 dh) and felt VERY clean and glowing afterwards! There are also massages and facial treatments performed by a qualified therapist.
I also used the laundry service, which I was a bit disappointed with, as the clothes I'd requested to be ironed, were still quite creased, but they didn't charge me for those items, when I pointed the creases out to them .
This place suited me - I don't like hotels that are too formal or 'faceless' this had some character.
2 mins from Place Abd El Ben Ali, with it's pavement cafes, restaurants and bars.
Taxi to Djemma el Fnaa 10dh.
The M'Kech tour bus stops near here too (which I used for the tour, then for getting around)
I'd reccommend this place for anyone wanting cheap, comfortable accommodation, with good services and a bit of character I thought it was very good value

Riad Al Mamoune: Friendly Riad in medina

This 16th century Riad is reasonably priced and about 5 mins from Djemma El Fnaa- depending on how quickly you get through the souk!
My taxi stopped in DEF, and a man with a cart was summoned by the driver, to take me (and my luggage) to my Riad. As we hurried through the souk, I tried to remember which stalls we turned left or right at, and tried to remember landmarks. ( I later found this was ok in the day -useless at night!!)
After a short while we arrived at a door in an alley way, which was opened by the manager of the hotel. I was shown into the courtyard, which was quite pleasant, and sat at a table with a freshly squeezed orange juice, as I filled in my address details etc.
He was very helpful during my stay, giving lots of information about things to do, and finding out about buses to Ouarzazate for me.
My room was up a flight of stairs, and was nicely decorated with a canopied bed, plenty of storeage space, there were fresh roses in a vase near my bed, oh and a narghile (hubba bubba pipe).
The bathroom was quite a surprise, a stone wash basin with bronze tap, and a shower that was contained in red stone, like the outer walls of Marrakech.
I was surprised to find that there wasn't a key for my room -it was lost somewhere - 2 girls in the room near me had the only room with a key! This was a slight concern, and I ended up sleeping with my heavy bag, and a chair against the door- which wasn't too ideal as the door opened outwards!
I just hoped I'd hear if anyone tried to enter, and fell over this pile. (There was a safe (free) for my passport, cards etc. in reception)
Unique Qualities: I enjoyed my 1 nights stay in this slightly quirky riad.
Breakfast was very enjoyable, sitting in one of the rooms on the ground floor, on a cushion at a low table, while I was served freshly squeezed orange juice from a pretty jug, with a lace edged cover, delicious pancakes with a sweet spread, freshly brewed coffee and fresh crusty bread.
It was quite an adventure to find this riad when I returned late at night (I'd had very little trouble finding it twice during the day) Of course the stalls in the souk were all closed, but I hadn't realised that the Outer gates were also closed, which ended up with me being shown an alternative route, and again, as it was dark, I missed the alley way, as it wasn't lit.
Luckily I was rescued by an elderly lady, who fetched her nephew who could speak english, and even though we were only about 200yds away, he still had 2 attempts to find it!

I booked this hotel as a package through Panorama Holidays, and found I had quite a bargain , I paid £309 for flight, airport transfer, 7 nights single room, B&B. Another company was offering the same for over £500. The hotel was very comfortable, clean and had a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were all friendly and polite (well except for one female on reception who never smiled)
The hotel was expanded in 2003, it's popular with tour groups and holidaying Moroccans.
Although situated in Gueliz, it's quite handy for getting around (It's just off Ave Mohammed V)
Unique Qualities: Attractively decorated, the reception/lounge area has seating and TV. The new part has a separate reception which closes at 2300hrs. A pool, hamman, sauna ( 60dh book at reception) games room, bar , 2 restaurants (one is on rooftop), well stocked gift shop, the extension has a pleasant lawned courtyard with fountains and a wall fountain that's lit up at night.
My room was in the new part. Twin beds, TV, storage, safe, bathroom with over-bath shower, air con/heater.
French windows opened onto the lawned courtyard, table and chairs to sit out (tho' in January it was a bit too cold to sit for long)
I'd definitely stay here again.

As I've said in my other tips, this hotel is a worth considering- a 3*+ Although in Gueliz (so not in the old part) It's quite handy to explore Marrakesh, just off Ave Mohammed V, and you get to experience the 'French Quarter'
The staff were all very friendly and helpful (except 1 female on reception, but she was the exception!) I returned to my room one day to find my night wear had been arranged very attractively! (as in photo!)
The hotel has a 'Turkish Bath' , I asked if this included a massage, I was told it didn't, but some of the staff could do a massage when 'off duty' (without the management knowing!!) As I had pulled my shoulder earlier in the week, when lugging my baggage from the coach in London I arranged a massage.
The massage soon sorted out my aching muscles and cost 100dh (provide your own oil) I felt fully re juvenated afterwards
Unique Qualities: The staff were mainly all very friendly- the boy in the gift shop gave me a present on my birthday (he was also very helpful on advising about prices of goods I wanted to buy in the Souks, or where to buy more obscure things such as my Muezzin clock (see my shopping tip)
The chambermaids were friendly (and often arranged my room/clothing very attractively), the bar men were always quite chatty, we discussed Moroccan sports, music, customs etc. The reception staff were very helpful, with info on places to visit, arranging a guide etc

Hotel IBN Batouta: Not the most welcoming hotel

I spent 2 separate nights here as part of a guided tour of Marrakech and the Sahara with Exodus travel. Once after spending the night in a gite in Telouet, before heading to Essaouira for a night, then returning here for our last night of the tour. I then moved to the Moroccan House for the last few days of my holiday.
Well this place had probably seen better days, any atmosphere had been sucked out. The reception staff just seemed bored, not exactly welcoming.
My room was on the 5th floor, and was ok, but had the most antiquated and noisy air con I'd ever come across.
My second night I fared a bit better, with a quieter time, and a slightly more pleasant room.
Breakfast was as uninspiring as the rest of this hotel experience - a few dried rolls, pastry, insipid coffee, even managed to make the orange juice nearly flavourless.
Blimey, I'm getting depressed typing this and remembering it.!
Well I didn't really have to spend too much time here, really just enough time for sleeping, getting ready to go out.
