Intermediate Traveller - and learning steadily...

by tsteele93 - last update: Feb 18, 2004

Brussels, Beligium

Ended up in Brussels when a flight from Venice was late, and we had to spend the night there on the airline's tab.

What a deal. Free hotel with mediocre hotel dinner, but Brussels turned out to be a blast.

Only had an evening there, but highly recommended. This would be a GREAT starting point for new travellers as there are several languages commonly spoken, including English, French and Flemish.

Lots to see and probably one of Europe's better kept secrets.

Venice, Italy

Most unique city you will likely ever visit. If you visit Italy, stay at least a couple of days here.

I like it at the end of the trip, as it is a slower paced city.

A+ stop for amatuer (any) photographers. Great scenes.

My recommendation - get a hotel near St Mark's square.

Florence, Italy

See David. Good shopping. Good city in Italy, better than Milan in my humble opinion.

Milan, Italy

Nice cathedral, you have the Last Supper and good shopping.

Rome, Italy

MUST DO CITY. Vatican, St Peters, Coliseum, and more...

Tips: Book a tour of the Vatican ahead of time. This lets you skip the UNBELIEVABLY long lines. Then ditch the tour.

In fact, if you aren't doing a "Rick Steve" style, "save as much money as humanly possible by staying in mud huts and eating cheese sandwiches" type tour then I recommend this for a LOT of things.

More often than not, tour packages let you skip line, then you can have your run of the place. You have spent a lot of money to get to Europe, why waste time in lines? Time really IS money at this point, so spend some extra money on a tour, to cut line and spend your valuable time in the place you are visiting, instead of standing in line outside of it.

Pantheon, over-rated but a quick must see - Same for Spanish steps.

Another interesting note, I had one of those artists at the Piazza Navona do a sketch of my wife for $50 and it is outstanding. What a great memento from a trip like that. It is framed in our house now.

Check out some of the lesser known Cathedral's and sites. We saw St Teresa's Ecstasy in a little cathedral with almost no one else there. Outside are some awesome fountains with Biblical themes.

Get a DK Eyewitness or your favorite brand and carefully mark some of these type places to visit.

Good shopping.

One of my favorite European destinations.

Pompeii, Italy

Over-rated. Not worth the trip from Rome in my opinion. It was neat, but just not neat enough unless you were close to begin with.

Barcelona, Spain

One of our all-time favorite cities!!! Highly UNDER-RATED. I had NO IDEA that this city would be so full of amazing sites.

MUST SEE: Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Mila. The hospital (St Pauls?) down from Sagrada. Barcelona Cathedral.

Taxi's were cheap. Food was very good.

Paris, France

You can't go wrong here. The Eiffel Tower blew me away. That may sound stupid, but you see pictures all your life, and none of them give you ANY IDEA how enormous the tower actually is - at least I was awed.

The Louvre - again, book a tour (or get a Carte Musees pass and go in the side entrance) and skip line!!!

Take you time, see what you like (not what other's tell you that you should like) and be sure to see Napoleon's apartments.

Closed on TUESDAY.

Mona Lisa is small and over-rated.
