We arrived into Chichen Itza late morning, and trekked a small distance through the rainforest.

Then it just dawns upon you, the Pyramid, the ball court, these magnificent structures, just there in the middle of a rainforest, with the hot Mexican sun beating down on you.

We enjoyed a few hours touring this ancient Mayan City, and then took lunch in a nearby restaurant.
My husband, the brave soul that he is climbed to the top of the pyramid, and then went underneath as well!
We stayed until nightfall to watch
the light and sound show.
We queued for what seemed like hours to get in, in the pouring rain, there was then a storm, and they were unsure if the show would go on....
It did, and the ruins were lit up, and the story was told - unfortunatley it was all in Spanish - so we couldnt understand a word!
However, it was a truly amazing experience.

I would certainly recommend it.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:history, views, not touristy
  • Cons:far away from most places you would stay in
  • In a nutshell:amazing - a city in the middle of nowhere.

intriguing place. I think I'd also ask my travel mate to climb for the pics... I found the pyramid near Mexico tough, under a burning sun. Is there a bistro at base camp? ;-)

It wasn't so bad going up, but I had seriously problems getting down again... I heard they have some kind of box to put inside and carry you down, so apparently someone must have gotten stuck there before... ;)
