We spent many hours wandering and getting lost in the small narrow streets of Venice. There are so many little bridges to gaze off and canals to sit at the side of......its a truly relaxing city.
One of the best things to actually do in Venice is walk and get lost.....you will stumble upon so many things, further away from the tourist trail and meet some locals.

St.Marks Square is for tourists the main focal point in Venice. T he square is beautiful, it has the legendary pigeons too!
The architecture in the square is amazing, surrounded by both the Procuratie Vecchie and Nuove.

This square runs down to the waterfront from St.Marks square past the Doges Palace.
This used to be a place for public executions but was originally a marketplace.
Today, the columns are the emblems of Venice, being the lion of St.Mark and St.Theodore.

This huge tower dominates St.Marks square along with the Basillica.
Its so high! But offers amazing views across Venice and there is a lift so its not so bad!
However, it doesnt help to know when your at the top that the original tower actually crumbled on 14th July 1902......but it was rebuilt !

You must go onto the balcony at San Marco, included in the price are not only brilliant views over the Piazza, but you get up close to the artwork. There is also a museum up here and you can see the original Guilded horses that once stood on the balcony.

The real name is the Palazzo Ducale, this was the official residence of the Doges and the seat of the government.
The building is beautiful, with white and pink mosaic and so many pillars!
We did not go inside, but I was told that you can take a tour in there that includes crossing the bridge of sighs and the prisons!

Also known as the Ponte dei Sospiri.
This bridge attatches the Doges Palace to the prison, and is named this because it is said that the prisoners used to sigh as they crossed the bridge to the prison.

The Ponte Dell Accademia is one of the three bridges which cross the Grand Canal. Its actually wooden and unlike any of the other bridges.
The original was metal and this one was built to replace it in 1930.
