History The city of Helsingør gained importance in the 14th century, when king Erik of Pommerania introduced a toll for all ships sailing the Sound. He built the castle Krogen to make sure that the ships paid. Later, Frederik II built Kronborg castle at the same site. During the ages, Helsingor would grow less important however, and after a union of countries had paid off the toll in 1857, the city lost all importance. |
What to visit? When in Helsingor, you should definitely pay a visit to Kronborg castle. It will not be disappointing. Other interesting places are the impressive saint Olai's cathedral and the our-lady's-monastery, the latter with accompanying church. |
