The town of Kalundborg was founded in the 12th century. The town came into development after the construction of a castle by Esbern Snare, a brother of the famous bishop Absalon of Roskilde. During the same time, the our-lady-church was built.
From the 12th to the 14th century, Kalundborg was one of the most important fortifications of the Danish king, together with Vordingborg and Absalon's castle in Copenhagen. Now only ruins remain of the outer walls of the city.
Kalundborg is a nice place for a one day trip. If you are a die-hard ruins fan, you can check out the remains of the fortifications. Kalundborg also offers a nice cozy church and there is a museum on the history of the town and its surroundings.
