Built in the 16th century, is the only surviving gate of medieval Vilnius... it is supposed that no enemy destroyed it since inside this gate there is a sacred icon of Holy Mary, which probably "blessed" this gate. It's nowadays a very important religious centre for Catholics, a real pilgrimage point for much people, mostly from the nearby (and ultra-Catholic) Poland.

Looking from inside the old town you can see the chapel above the gate which houses the holy image of the Virgin Mary, the White Madonna, said to have miraculous powers. The walls of the chapel are covered by thousands of votive offerings and many pilgrims come to pray, climbing the the stairs from the road to the chapel on their knees.

Just attached to the gates there is the first of the many churches we'll see in Vilnius. It's the church of St. Theresa built by the fathers Carmelites. It is now connected with the chapel of the Holy Virgin Mary by a staircase built in the 18th century.

This Rococo-style gate was built in the 18th century, and leads to the Basilian Monastery and the church of the Holy Trinity. The gate has just been restored to its beauty, while both the church and the monastery still nedd some restoration.

Vilnius old town has many narrow streets, but really few squares, this is one of them! Here you can find the neoclassical Town Hall (with the Information centre), but you won't see it on my picture since the sun was in front of me! ;-) All buildings have been restored, and there are many open-air cafés and bars, as well as restaurants. It's a pity it's not a pedestrian zone, so beware of cars while walking around the square!

I don't know how many times I walked along this street up and down in my 2 days in Vilnius, anyway it's probably the most visited street of the town, and it's really nice. You can find any kind of restaurant, café and shop... yeah, the ideal place for a tourist! ;-) It was so nice walking around in the early morning, with few people around, but also at midday, or at night with tons of young and old people walking up and down the atmosphere was always good.

This was one of the first Roman Catholic churches built in Lithuania, at the end of the 14th century, in gothic style. The church was held by the fathers Jesuits from the 16th and became part of the University complex. Quite little of the originary gothic style is still there nowadays, but it's still one of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius. The bell tower of St. John's church was built in 1571 and is even higher than the Cathedral's (68 m). Inside the church there is also a small museum

This church is also known as the Dominican church, since it was given to Dominican order by Aleksandras Jogailaitis in 1501. It is one of the most monumental and ornate churches of Vilnius, built in late baroque style. The interior is magnificent, in its Rococo style with incredible decorations, probably one of the finest (and richest) examples throughout Lithuania (and Europe). Being a Dominican church it's not strange to find there a cloister too, with beautiful frescos of the 18th century.

The university in Vilnius, along with its 11 courtyards, is one of the oldest in Europe (it was founded in 1579), and it's an architectonic masterpiece of different styles. It first was a Jesuit college, transformed few years later in University. In 1773, the Jesuit order was dissolved in Europe and the University was taken over by the secular authority. In the recent years Vilnius University started to free itself from the Soviet ideology before the rest of the country, and helped in gaining independence from USSR.

Vilnius Cathedral is Lithuania’s spiritual and political centre. It lies down beside Gediminas hill, and It's thought that in pagan times this was the location of an altar or even a temple to Perkūna. It was first built in the 13th century, but due to fires, wars, and unstable ground, it was rebuilt quite a lot of times, and so you can find many different styles in it, expecially in the interior, from gothic to baroque to renaissance. The exterior is much less interesting, in its neoclassical style, while inside the Cathedral there are some wonderful treasures, the most famous is the baroque chapel of St. Casimir.
