If you're looking for a great beachfront location, but not wanting to spend over $100 for a hotel room in Rio, then the Arpoador Inn is a good value.
Although the rooms can be a little musty, and very basic, the location can't be beat.
Pay the extra $30 USD for a beachfront room--overlooking Arpoador Point and Ipanema boardwalk/beach. The view and the sound of the surf makes the extra expense worth it.
Service was just o.k. We asked for an iron and ironing board on a late Saturday afternoon (to get dressed to attend a wedding), and the front desk staff gave us some lame excuse about the "ironing facilities" being closed by 4pm each day. Also, there was some confusion over hotel tax--they wanted that paid in cash, rather than on the credit card. (?)
Finally, do NOT buy the Internet card for the Internet service they have at the hotel. It is quite costly, and the computers are EXTREMELY slow--you're better off finding an Internet cafe somewhere else.
Unique Qualities: PRIME location--right on the beach...Arpoador is the midpoint where Copacabana and Ipanema meet. There is NO street or long avenida between the hotel and the beach--the picture you see here was taken right outside our room!...the location gives it a restful feel since all you have to do is step outside and you are on the boardwalk/beach. No having do dodge cars on the busy avenida to cross the street on the beach like you do with the hotels in Copacabana!
Climb the rocks at Arpoador Point for stunning views....and nice sunrise/sunset.
