Just southeast of the highway between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro there is a forested and mountainous area that is unique in so many ways: this and the Mantigueira area is the last remnant of the Atlantic Rainforest that once covered most of the Brazilian coast here.
By taking off the main highway or going down to the coast along the few roads that wind down here, you will encounter these mountains and cliffs scoured by fog and rain. Dense forest crowd up wherever there is a chance to put down root hold. There was no services of any sorts that I saw, only that of the small town nearby, that rarely see visitors.
This rainforest has some of the highest density and richness in biological diversity in the world. If you have that kind of interest, this place is for you!
