Prickly Visit to the Back of Beyond | Wonderous sunsets over the saguaro landscape. |
I spent about a week in Baja. Too little. And I did too much. Baja is such a wonderous, wonderful place, especially if you do not mind roughing it. Among the places to re-visit Baja is very high on my list.
Baja is the penninsula that juts out from below the San Diego-Tijuana US-Mexico border. It goes on and on, some 800 miles through a fantastic desert garden. There are some rustic cities, some definite tourist resorts, but for the most part, just desert wilderness. And - what a great wilderness! I grew so fond of this place just in these few days, and Baja never left my mind. |
| | Few deserte match Baja Ecologically, the Baja desert is a part of the Sonoran ecosystem. However, there are variations from north to south and from the sea coast and salt marshes via the boulder strewn granitic cacti gardens to the tree clad volcanoes.
Most of all, Baja is a colorful geological collection sand, rocks, boulders, scree, rocky slopes of all colors, and a vast, prickly garden of cacti and other desert growth. I have been lucky to see my shares of desert landscapes, but Baja beats them all. While this desert, too is uniform and vast, it is so colorful and varied when you get close enough. |

| | Baja - reachable: How to visit Baja? By road from the north, your own vehicle or public bus. Great with a van and some friends. By ferry from the Mexican "mainland" - Mazatlan. Or by plane to the Southern Baja and stay or work your way up the penninsula. On the east coast you can kayak (rentals or BYO), in the south there are all-inclusive resorts and kayak and hiking package tours. Whale watching tours on the Pacific wild west coast of Baja where the humpback whales breed. Yes, many choices and all of them will be good... And the food, too - simple Mexican fare off the beaten track, but ohhh, so good! With the Pacifico beer and all the fish and shellfish of Baja food, you understand that this desert rises from the sea. |
