"Elgin by default" Elgin by Saagar

I had no idea about Elgin prior to coming here, and sometimes that's an ok approach - no preconceived notions about the place. A nice, small town a bit inland from the Firth of Moray between the sea and the mountains. Before coming I had no idea that this was whisky country. In my imagination the whisky was a product of harsh conditions on the western Scottish iles and thereabouts. The difference between Mekong Whisky and the stuff that flowed in the veins of Elgians was sufficiently distinct to make me carry a bottle home. I asked for a local whisky and the people in the shop just looked bewildered...

Not that much to do, but definitely something that makes the polace nice and interesting. Itis a fairly important crossing point forpeople on the way between Inverness and Aberdeen, and from the sea to the inland (Grampian Hills). Already this guarantees a supply of eateries and drinking places. The whisky selection in local bars is astounding. If you can shake the fog away from your eyes you will also see a nice landscape, the nice river valley of River Spey - famously good salmon fishing for those iterested - and the whisky trail incorporates Elgin. Otherwise - whatever is Scottish, from the cow pie to tartans to Angus beef and the hinto of insularity and nationalism, it is all there and by and large very nicely so.
