Facade of Hamalet Lodge
Only stayed for a snack and drink and talk with the owner as part of a research trip up the Tamakoshi Valley. Seemed to be an ok place, right on the trail in the old part of the village (a 4x4 motorable road of sorts passes below the village) and it seemed clean and pleasant. Service was good, but the entire establishment did not seem much beyond the ordinary. They had a few guest house type rooms upstairs from the restaurant. Given the hydel construction boom in the valley, they were probably quite busy at Hamalet. I'd be happy to stay there if I were in need of lodging for the night coming this way in the late afternoon/evening.
Unique Qualities: Ordinary guest house and food. Phone access.
Address: Village centre, Gongar Village
Comparison: about average
Directions: Gongar is a village inbetween Jagat (south) and Chetchet (north) in the upper Tamakoshi Valley. En route to Lamabagar and Tibet or Rolwaling.
Price: less than US$20
A small-town guest house meant primarily for local travellers. Stayed two nights - in and out of trekking. The first visit was miserable because of overcroding and we had to use an annex with limited access to water, toilet etc. Basically just a dorm.
The last visit was better, with a room to ourselves (3 pax) and the fleas. at grund level there is a restaurants of sorts, no complaints, the staple daal bhat was good, but apart from snacks and instant noodles there was no choice to be had.
No English spoken, but if you do not understand the local lingo, locals will help you find it and see to it that you are taken care of.
we had a good time over meals, the fleas had a good time over their night meals.
Unique Qualities: The fleas? Well, perhaps that is not unique?
There are a copule of other and newer places in town that I would recommend. One was crowded with maternity clinic clienst, the other was under construction during my last visit.
Address: Centre of town, south side of the bridge in Singati
Comparison: least expensive
Price: less than US$20
This is a very good hotel if you are visiting for a conference, meeting, resting after a trek, want to read a book with a view, don't want to be disturbed for a while.
I was here resting after a trek with Nepalese colleagues and two of my own family. The place was partially occupied by an ILO-workshop. This place is a wonderful location for that sort of thing - metings, workshops etc. And as I did, resting after a streneous 8-day walk, there would be no better place in the region.
Good to get a hot showers and have your clothes washed.
USD 48 for a double room.
Unique Qualities: The view north toward the Ama Bamara and Rolwaling Himalaya, east and south toward the rolling hills.
Good use of local building materials and style, there was space and air in both the rooms and the central building.
As proved, a good place for kids to run around - no cars allowed on the central property.
You have to walk a bit to reach the place located on a ridge top above the town centre of Charikot.
You can reach all of Charikot by foot, easily.
Address: Charikot, Dolakha
Comparison: most expensive
Directions: From the central crossroads KTM-Dolakha-Jiri, it's a sideroad up the hill towards the southeast. Short walk. Parking available nearby.
