Going out of business: Going out of business...NOT!
  • Tip Rating:
  • You'll see countless electronics stores, particularly in well-touristed midtown areas. We know these as "going out of business" stores because they lure customers in with those fake signs. They'll offer cash discounts too fantastic to believe. Take my word, DON'T BELIEVE THEM. The "list" prices on the stickers are phony, and you're likely to buy discountinued merchandise.

Alternative: Buyer beware! Before you buy anything, check the internet, the manufacturer's web site (to see if the merchandise is legit) and the Better Business Bureau or Consumer Affairs. Or just spend your money at a reputable dealer. B&H is a highly regarded photo shop, J&R and Comp USA are two reputable computer dealers. Just ask around, and always pay by credit card for your own protection.

Tourist Trap: Restaurants ONLY a tourist could love
  • Tip Rating:
  • With 25,000+ restaurants competing for customers who know their food, you'd think it'd be hard to stay in business serving mediocre food. Unfortunately, many people come all the way to New York just to eat in the same places they know from their local mall. We've got fantastic Italian restaurants, yet the Olive Garden draws a crowd. Ditto for Red Lobster, Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, Mama Sbarro's, etc. You'd never find a native there.

Alternative: If you're not an online subscriber, pick up a copy of Zagat's restaurant guide. Its quirky reviews and ratings are right on the money. A great way to help explore the possibilities of dining in New York.
