After numerous attempts to return to South America, I was finally able to realize that dream here in Lima, Peru.
Lima is a city that falls under the radar of a lot of travelers who come to South America, but certainly should not be ignored. It is general thought of as a one or two day stop off on the way to Cusco (not a bad idea when you only have a week to travel), but the city does have a lot to offer if you have more time to explore. In the last few months/years there have a multitude of restuarant and bar openings in the city and it is well on its way to becoming very cosmpolitan.
Although maybe not on the same level culturally, Lima reminds me a lot of Buenos Aires. First, the food is absolutely amazing here, especially the seafood. Everyone raves about the ceviche but there is so much more than that. There are countless resturants that serve top-notch seafood at very resonable prices (see my list of restuarant tips for individual reviews). Second, with the exception of some overcast and humid months in winter close to the coast, Lima has very nice weather. It is located on the Pacific Ocean and there are numerous beaches and places to surf. Granted, the city beaches are not the greatest, but not terrible, and certain better than those in Buenos Aires. Plus, it never rains. Finally, the nighlife has plenty to offer and goes all night long Wednesday through Saturday.
After having lived here for a good amount of time I can honestly say there are very few places in which I would rather be living at this time. This is definitely a city on the rise, and with continued political stability and good economic growth, it could really put itself on the international map. |
| | Pros: 1. Amazing food 2. Cheap 3. Great nightlife 4. Generally good weather 5. Easy access to other surrounding cities 6. Located on the ocean
Cons: 1. Overcast for a good amount of winter 2. Lacking a little culturally |
| | Conclusion: One of the best cities in S. America. Most def worth seeing or living here if you can. |
